Papier-Mâché
Papier-mâché, from French, means chewed or crushed paper. This art form allows various items to be made using easily accessible and inexpensive materials.
Despite its French name, this interesting technique comes from China. Nowadays, the papier-mâché technique is most widely used for making masks and theater decor.
There are many ways to practice the papier-mâché technique. One of them is the layering technique. To use this technique, glue small paper strips onto a pre-prepared plaster base.
The idea is to glue all the pieces in a chaotic way to create several layers. It is important to note that each piece should be coated with glue on both sides to give it strength. After each layer, wait for it to dry before continuing with the next one.
The second way to apply this technique is with the help of newspapers. For this purpose, tear the newspapers into small pieces and soak them in hot water for ten hours.
Heat the resulting mass to completely destroy the fibers. Squeeze out the mass and mix the remains with a mixer until it becomes homogeneous. Add some glue and voila! The mixture is ready for use.
How to Make a Papier-Mâché Mix?
First Option – Paper-Mâché with Glue
Required Materials
- Magazines or newspapers
- About 200g white glue
- 100ml water
- 75g chalk
Preparation
- Cut or tear the newspaper into small pieces.
- Mix the white glue with the water in a container. Grate the chalk over the resulting mixture. Then dip the paper strips you did earlier into the mixture and let them soak.
- When the paper is well-soaked, apply it to the item you want to decorate. After applying the first layer, wait for about 10 minutes for it to dry, then repeat, adding a second layer, and so on.
- After adding the second layer, wait at least an hour before applying the next one. Do not apply more than four layers.
- When all layers are completely dry, add some finishing touches and enjoy your creation!
Second Option – Papier-Mâché with Flour
Required Materials
- 800ml water
- 200g flour
Preparation
- Take a pot, fill it with water, and bring it to a boil. Then, turn off the stove and add the flour, stirring well to mix.
- When the water and flour turn into a homogeneous mixture, wait a bit for it to cool, then apply the paper and decorate the item.
