Plastic Connectors for Bracelets, Necklaces and DIY Decorations
Plastic connectors are acrylic components with two or more holes. Unlike a standard bead threaded onto a single strand, a connector joins, separates or organises multiple strands within one piece of jewellery.
They are most commonly used in multi-strand bracelets, branching necklaces and decorative accessories. They keep strands neatly in place so they do not twist or bunch together, and because they are lightweight acrylic, they add no unwanted bulk to larger designs.
Choosing the right connector
Start with the holes — how many there are and how they are arranged. A connector with two parallel holes keeps two strands running side by side. One with several holes on one side and a single hole on the other gathers multiple strands into a single point. That distinction matters if you are making a branching bracelet with a complex structure.
Practical tip: before you start, sketch a quick diagram of the project — how many strands it will have, where they come together and where they end. It makes it much easier to work out whether you need a two-, three- or multi-hole connector.
A mistake beginners often make: choosing a connector purely for its shape or colour without checking the holes — then finding the strands do not run in the right direction. The fix: always check the product image and hole count, not just the overall look.
What they are used for
Multi-strand bracelets. Connectors hold individual strands in place and help the bracelet sit neatly on the wrist rather than shifting and bunching.
Branching necklaces. Useful whenever you want several strands to fan out from a focal point or converge toward a clasp.
DIY decorations and accessories. Keychains, pendants, bag charms and other handmade projects where multiple strands need to meet at a single point.
💡 Project idea — layered multi-strand bracelet: thread three strands of different bead styles — for example, solid colour, metallic and transparent — through a three-hole connector at each end. Finish with a lobster clasp on one side and a short chain on the other for an adjustable fit. The connector keeps the strands evenly spaced and the layered look structured rather than tangled. Add a small plastic pendant to the centre strand as a focal point.
What to combine them with
For bracelets, choose elastic cord, cotton cord, beading wire, or thin jewellery wire depending on the hole size. With smaller holes, a stiffer wire or cord threads through more easily than soft yarn, which tends to buckle and snag.
Alongside the connector itself, add plastic and acrylic beads, metal spacers, pendants, pompoms, or ready-made decorative elements. The finished piece looks most cohesive when the surrounding beads echo at least one colour already present in the connector.
What to check before buying
The most important factors are clean holes, smooth edges, and accurate shape. If a hole has plastic residue or a sharp edge inside, the cord will fray during stringing or wear.
Also check that all holes are large enough for your chosen cord — especially important in multi-strand projects where more than one strand may need to pass through the same hole.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a connector and a standard bead?
A standard bead has one hole and sits on a single strand. A connector has two or more holes and is used to join, separate, or organise multiple strands within a single piece.
How many strands can one connector handle?
It depends on the number and arrangement of holes. A two-hole connector keeps two strands separate; three or more holes allow more complex constructions. Always check the image and product description before ordering.
Which cord works best with plastic connectors?
Elastic cord, cotton cord, beading wire and thin jewellery wire are all common choices. The right one depends on the hole size and whether you want the finished piece to be stretchy, adjustable, or fastened with a clasp.
Are they suitable for children’s projects?
Plastic connectors are lightweight and manageable for craft activities, but they are not toys. Small parts are a choking hazard for children under 3. When working with children, choose larger elements and always work under adult supervision.
