In the Colorful World of Pencils and Crayons
Colored pencils and crayons for drawing and decoration are an easy and beautiful way to add color and mood to our daily lives. What could be better than delighting ourselves or our children with a set of new colored pencils, pens, crayons, or even chalks to create wonderful pictures?
Material Composition
Colored pencils are pencils that have a core made of colored pigment. While standard pencils have a core made of graphite and clay, most colored pencils have a core made of wax, pigments, additives, and other binding agents.
History of Pencils and Crayons for Drawing and Decoration
Colored Pencils
The earliest history of colored pencils is not well documented. However, it is known that the ancient Greeks and Romans used wax-based crayons.
The first colored pencils appeared in the 19th century and were used for checking and marking. Later in 1834, the German company of Johann Sebastian Staedtler invented the colored pastel pencil.
Real production of colored pencils for artistic purposes began in the early 20th century. The first colored pencils were invented and produced in 1924 by Faber Castell and Caran d’Ache.
Crayons
The production of decorative crayons began as early as the 1980s by the two founders of “Crayola,” Binney and Smith, and initially, they were primarily red.
An interesting fact is that the company’s name means crayons, and they were named by Binney’s wife, Alice, who thought it was very fitting to combine the French word “craie,” meaning chalk, with the first letters of the word “oleaginous,” meaning waxy paraffin (one of the ingredients of crayons). Thus, the word “Crayola” was born. These facts, however, pertain to the English term.
For the Bulgarian term, it’s slightly different as the word “pastel” comes from Italian and means chalk or colored pencil.
Now, a little interesting information about the technology of crayon production. They consist of only two ingredients, paraffin and pigment. These ingredients are stored in special heated tanks. They are mixed and heated to a very high temperature until liquefied, then the liquid is poured into molds and cooled with cold water.
Types of Crayons
There are several types of crayons, including dry, oil, and wax. Earlier, we explained the technology for making dry crayons, which are the basis for the other two types, with oil crayons having a small amount of linseed oil added.
- Dry crayons are further divided into soft and hard.
- Soft crayons consist mostly of pure pigment with very little binding material, making them suitable for broader strokes.
- Hard crayons are less likely to break because they contain more binding material. They are convenient for drawing fine lines, paying attention to details, or creating various tones.
Other interesting facts about crayons are that there are about 120 different colors of crayons, and it is believed that the most used colors are blue and red.
Types of Colored Pencils for Drawing and Decoration
There are several types of colored pencils, ranging from those for professional artists to hobbyists and children.
- Professional artist pencils – these have higher concentrations of high-quality pigments compared to children’s colored pencils. They are highly resistant to UV light, hard to break, and waterproof.
These pencils are of very high quality and offer the most extensive range of colors. Typically, they can be found in sets of 72 to 120 colors or even more. They can also be purchased individually.
- Pencils for young children and students – these pencils are of lower quality. They are not resistant to sunlight, and their pigments are not as high-quality as those for professional artists. Their color range is relatively smaller, limited to 24 or 36 colors.
Using lower-quality colored pencils has its advantages. Some companies offer erasable colored pencils for beginners and children to experiment freely.
These pencils also have much lower prices, making them ideal for elementary and middle school students.
- Watercolor pencils – also known as water-soluble pencils, they are the golden mean of colored pencils. They can be used dry like regular colored pencils for drawing or wet for a watercolor effect.
For wet application, the dry pigment is usually applied first and then finished with a wet paintbrush to enhance and spread the colors.
- Pastel pencils – they are very similar to hard pastels. They can be used alone or in combination with other pencils.
